Water Day

March 22 is World Water Day.

So today we take a moment to reflect on our water footprint and the initiatives we take at Gediflora to make the best use of water. Not only humans need water to live. Even our little plants can't grow without a sip of water. Therefore, we try to use every drop of water as efficiently as possible.

The rainwater that ends up on the roofs at Gediflora's site is reused in several ways. For example, we use this water for ebb-and-flow watering, misting via the pouring tree, high-pressure misting net and drippers. In addition, all water used on the farm is recirculated so no water is lost.

Water is a crucial foodstuff for our plants. It therefore goes through an entire process before it reaches the plants. When it rains, the water falls on the roof of the shed and greenhouse. Via the rain gutter the water enters the cistern. This water is then pumped up and sent over the UV filter. The result after this is pure water that can be used for misting in the greenhouses or for making the nutrient solution for our plants. All this water is eventually collected again and passes through the UV filter again so that it can be used again.

At Gediflora we also try to use water in a thoughtful way. In summer, we only water at night because that way we can prevent loss through evaporation. In addition, the toilets and showers are connected to rainwater so that precious drinking water does not have to be used.

Fact: our water basin is 10,000 m³. This means that at Gediflora we store as much water as the contents of four Olympic-sized swimming pools.
